My chief reporter: You look like the dogs have been chewing on your hair.
My friend B: You dirty hippy.
Ah, the challenges of being a baby dreadhead! It’s been over six months since I last used a comb and brush and my hair is taking me on a wild ride. If you met me you probably wouldn’t immediately know I was a dreadhead – you’d probably think I’d just got out of bed. Yes, my hair is that messy.
There’s no doubt about it: growing natural-neglect dreadlocks takes patience. My hair is a long way from being fully locked up; I reckon it will be done in about a year or even longer. I could have done it the backcomb way and have a full head of nicely-maturing dreads by now. Instead I have hair that is about two-thirds dreaded and one-third straight: knotted, twisted, looped, plaited, and sticking out at all kinds of odd angles.
I want someone who knows about dreadlocks to have a good look at them and deal to them if necessary. I must mix in the wrong circles because I only know two women who have had dreadlocks – and both of them live a long way away, so they can’t help. I have been ripping the roots [not as bad as it sounds] myself when I can feel two dreads starting to loop together, but it really needs to be done by someone else who can see everything properly.
With all this fuss, you’re probably wondering why I’m persisting with dreads. Truth is, I haven’t once thought about combing them out. I love watching my hair change – it’s growing as well as dreading. I love the lack of maintenance: wash, separate, and palm-roll once a week. No more combing and styling, hooray! I love “decorating” my dreads with pretty beads. I love it when someone notices I have dreadlocks. I love thinking about the fully mature dreads I’ll have in a couple of years!
To see where the journey started, including a photo of my hair pre-dreads, go here.
And this is a recent photo of my dreads, taken by Pohangina Pete. The purple bead in the centre of my head is the first bead I bought for my hair, and it lives on the first dread that formed.

Kia ora Anne-Marie,
I think I may have stood behind you at a Grateful Dead concert long ago! Happy growing.

Wow, and I don't even remember it at all. Fancy! ;-)
OK - so they have these shows from time to time where they have a topic-of-the-week and i seem to remember watching somewhere that if you stop washing your hair with shampoo etc for long enough then it recovers and starts to wash itself with natural oils (true: it goes through a stinky phase first).
So i guess my message is: if it's what you want to do then stick with it and be happy. I used to have long hair a couple of years ago because i'd always wanted to try it - don't regret it at all
Hungry Pixies - I've heard that about not washing your hair and I never knew if it was true or not. [Not willing to give it a try.] A lot of people think you have to stop washing your hair to have dreads. In fact, the oil produced by not washing your hair slows down the knotting process. I know for myself, every time I wash my hair it knots up a little further.
I definitely have "stickability" when it comes to hair styles. I had my head shaved for 15 years :-)

Hey Anne-Marie: this relates back to your previous book-of-the-month posting
I was in a branch of Borders (sort of like Waterstones if you don't have them there) on Saturday and they had a book called Pride And Predjudice And Flesh Eating Zombies - in which the characters of Jane Austin's original fight, in their plucky way, against social injudices, the advances of Mr D'arcy and an army of the evil dead.
Because of course that's exactly what the novel was missing - er...
Hi Anne-Marie,
I always wanted the courage to do dreads, just once, but never quite got there - so good on you for going the whole mile and persisting.
Instead, I ended up getting just one part of my hair 'wrapped' in cotton thread that kind of dreaded as I was able to leave it in for about 6 months.
Of course, I'm over it now and still have my long hair at 42 which I love. I refuse to cut it, dye burgandy and turn in to Gen-X super frumpy mum!
Namaste
Hungry Pixies - we considered reading that book for our book group, but people were put off by the freaky cover!
Hey Amanda - 42 is not to old to begin dreads! And there are much quicker ways to get the process done than the way I'm using. You should give it a go.
the trick is to use soap not shampoo and to roll em while they're soapy, just like wool felt!
they look fab and can be played with beautifully but there are two things that hold me back
the first is that i love the sensation of brushing my hair and the second is the story i heard recently about the son of an acquaintance who, on shedding his amazing matted locks, found other residents, notably a red-striped arachnid and her brood of babies.
but you don't have red-backs in Aotearoa and the wetas are too big to sneak in so i guess you're safe!
Kia ora India, thanks very much for the comment. You must be joking about the soap, though. I can't think of any thing worse to wash my hair in - talk about drying out the scalp! At the moment I'm washing my hair in ordinary shampoo but might change to a specific dread shampoo [ie, residue-free] soon.
I've heard various versions of the spider-in-the-dreads story, and I'm not worried! I actually wash my hair regularly so it's unlikely I'd get any fauna living in there. The closest thing to alive I have in my hair is a couple of stones I collected from the beach :-)
ive grown natural dreads nearly 20 years now
it really rarely takes as long as you describe although it can in some
if you want tips on how to speed it up without compromizing the natural journey or resorting to harmful produfcts visit http://dreadlockforums.ning.com/
It's actually quicker to twist your hair and you don't have that "my hair looks like shit phase" or backcombing... did you do any research before you decided this??
The point here is clearly not to get "perfect" dreads as quick as possible, but to let them develop in the way they want, with a little bit of help.
anne-marie- your dreads look awesome! A lot like mine actually, mine are almost 7 months now.
